## Definition
**Responsibility** describes the willingness to stand by the impact of one's own actions.
It arises where people possess knowledge, relationships, resources, or opportunities for action and are prepared to answer for their effects.
In a living network, responsibility is not exclusively tied to fixed hierarchies or formal positions.
## Responsibility Begins Internally
Control primarily describes an external system.
Responsibility, on the other hand, begins within a person.
A person can adhere to all the rules and still not take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
Likewise, a person can act very responsibly even when no one is controlling them.
## Responsibility Arises Through Relationships
People rarely take responsibility because they are forced to.
They take responsibility when they feel connected to a task, a community, or another person.
TEIKEI therefore asks:
How do relationships emerge in which people want to take responsibility?
## What Responsibility Requires
Responsibility does not mean arbitrariness.
For people to take responsibility, they need:
- comprehensible information
- shared goals
- clear roles
- open communication
- mutual trust

*Responsibility grows from relationships, not from coercion.*
**How to read the diagram:** On the left, control as an external system; on the right, responsibility, which begins internally and arises through relationships to a task, a community, or another person. Below, what people need to take responsibility: comprehensible information, shared goals, clear roles, open communication, and mutual trust. Control has its place but should strengthen responsibility and not displace it. Top right, "↑ Part of" leads back to [Transaction Chains](/en/home/0_Einstieg-und-%C3%9Cberblick/Glossar/Transaktionsketten). Boxes with ↗ lead to: [Relationship](/en/home/0_Einstieg-und-%C3%9Cberblick/Glossar/beziehung), [Trust](/en/home/0_Einstieg-und-%C3%9Cberblick/Glossar/vertrauen).
## Responsibility and Control
Control has its place, for example, in food safety, the protection of personal data, legal requirements, and financial transparency.
It should strengthen responsibility and not displace it.
## Distributing and Delegating Responsibility
TEIKEI does not organize itself through rigid chains of command but through circles of responsibility, clearly defined areas of responsibility, and appropriate delegation spaces.
Decisions should be made where expertise, relationships, experience, and impact best come together.
Delegating responsibility does not mean simply handing it off.
It must remain clear:
- who is taking on a task,
- what information is necessary for it,
- what decision-making scopes exist,
- and who remains available if difficulties arise.

*Delegating means: remaining clear about who carries what.*
**How to read the diagram:** When delegating responsibility, it is not simply handed off. It must remain clear who is taking on the task, what information is necessary for it, what decision-making scopes exist, and who remains available if difficulties arise. Below: Decisions are made where expertise, relationships, experience, and impact best come together. Boxes with ↗ lead to: [Delegation, Trust, and Learning Decisions](/en/home/1_TEIKEI_Agora/Entscheidungen_Governance/Entscheidungsfindung).
## TEIKEI Perspective
A cooperative economy emerges where people voluntarily take responsibility because they see themselves as part of a shared context.
The more responsibility is collectively borne, the more stable relationships become and the faster difficulties can be addressed.
TEIKEI therefore also shares risks, such as crop failures.
## Condensed Core Statement
Responsibility describes the willingness to stand by the impact of one's own actions. It grows from relationships and is collectively borne, made visible, and delegated within the network.
