Grain becomes flour and bread, milk becomes cheese, fruit becomes juice. Further processing businesses turn farm products into new foods. In the TEIKEI Network, they are part of the producers.
This page describes who belongs to this group, how further processing and refinement differ, and what sustainable collaboration requires.
The glossary entry Producer counts among producers, among others:
In addition, there are cideries, manufactories, and other businesses that transform agricultural products into new products.
Both terms are closely related. In the wiki, they appear in two places:
| Refinement | Further Processing | |
|---|---|---|
| What it’s about | A product is brought to a state at its origin in which it can be passed on | New food is created from products |
| Examples | Pressing olives into oil, sorting, filling, preparing in the packing house | Baking bread, making cheese, pressing juice, making spreads |
| Where it stands in the network | Among the actors: Refinement Businesses | Among the producers, in this section |
The boundary is fluid. A mill or an olive press can be both. The same foundation applies to both: the Charter for Refinement Businesses. It explicitly addresses further processing businesses and refinement businesses.
Further processing businesses handle the transition between agricultural production, artisanal processing, product quality, and community supply. This is how the Charter describes it.
They are not merely technical service providers. They share responsibility for ensuring that origin, recipe, and processing remain traceable.
According to the Charter, clarity is needed about:
This includes processing raw materials carefully and in accordance with their nature, and openly naming deviations.
Those who process larger quantities can source through TEIKEI Bulk. The project bundles needs for professional structures and explicitly mentions further processors.
Further processing also has a root: the cultures from which cheese, bread, and ferments emerge. More on this on the page Cultures for Processing.
